PLUS: Gandalf gets arrested in Florida

GM. This is Milk Road. Weā€™re not like a regular crypto newsletter; weā€™re a *cool* crypto newsletter.

Hereā€™s what weā€™ve got for you today:

  • Genesis owes top 50 creditors $3.6B

  • Gandalf is in trouble.

  • Robinhoodā€™s new Metamask rival

  • Brett Harrison wants to hire his old FTX US buddies

GENESIS VS. GEMINI

Genesis has officially filed for bankruptcy after months of a whole lotta chaos. And the Winklevoss twins are not happy.

Genesis went from being one of the biggest crypto lenders to losing big when hedge fund Three Arrows Capital (3AC) went under. It then lost even more moolah in a liquidity crunch when FTX imploded, was forced to pause withdrawals in November, and now itā€™s filed for Chapter 11.

Itā€™s one of the biggest dominoes to come crashing down after FTX.

Genesis says it has $150M in cash on hand but it owes waaaaaaaaay more than that:

  • $3.6 BILLION is due to its top 50 creditors.

  • One of those claims amounts to ~$500M, another to $230M

  • Most of the claims come from individual creditors, per The Block

  • Others are from Gemini (the crypto exchange owned by the Winklevoss twins) which is owed $766M

  • Genesis also owes $150M to Babel Finance, the lender that took a market beating last June

Understandably, the Winklevii are M*A*D*.

And they havenā€™t been shy about throwing shade at Genesis, its parent company Digital Currency Group (DCG,) and its CEO, Barry Silbert.

(As a refresher: Gemini used Genesis as its lending partner for its now-dead Earn program, which let users earn yield on the crypto they put on the platform.)

Now, Cameron Winklevoss said theyā€™re going to sue Silbert and DCG ā€œimminentlyā€ if they donā€™t offer a plan on how to repay that gigantor loan.

He said Genesis filing for bankruptcy ā€œdoes not insulate Barry, DCG, and any other wrongdoers from accountability.ā€

Shots FIRED.

Genesis and Gemini might have beef, but theyā€™re in the same boat for one thing at least:

Theyā€™ve both been sued by the SEC over selling unregistered securities.

Wonder if thisā€™ll ever be an ā€œenemy of my enemy is my friendā€ sorta dealio.

TODAY'S EDITION IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY PILLAR FI

Crypto is like sneaker drop season - thereā€™s something new everyday.

New products, new features, new blockchains, new CEOs (lots of new CEOs)

That creates an issue. Thereā€™s so much shit to build and not enough time to build it.

This is why we are introducing Etherspot BUIDLer.

The BUIDLer is a react component that lets you add any of these features to your dApp, web3 game, and wallet:

  • Web2 onboarding for Web3: onboard your web2 users through social logins, create counter-factual wallets, and enable easy recovery. No seed phrases required.

  • Multi-Chain Experience: users can control their wallets on any chain from any endpoint providing a seamless multi-chain experience. Stay connected to Polygon while executing one-click actions on Optimism.

  • Meta-Transactions: allow users to pay for gas with ANY token on any chain. Currently, we support DAI, USDC, USDT and BUSD as a gas token. Etherspot SDK can support any token on any chain that has liquidity.

Plus it lets you sponsor transactions for web3 apps, batch multiple transactions into one digital signature, and allows users to buy and sell crypto without KYC on your dapp.

You can implement the BUIDLer Component with just two lines of code. You donā€™t need an integration key and it supports over 14 EVM chains.

OKAY WE'LL BITE. WHAT'S BITZLATO

Alright, donā€™t hate the Milk Man.

We know the only reason weā€™re all talking about Bizlato (no, thatā€™s not a pastry cousin to baklava) is because the DOJ shut it downā€¦

ā€¦instead of snaky players that weā€™ve actually heard of before like, idk, Celsiusā€¦

ā€¦after ominously and cryptically tweeting that it had a major enforcement action coming just hours before.

But still, might be good to knowā€¦what the heckinā€™ heck is Bitzlato?

  • Itā€™s a Hong Kong-registered crypto exchange run by a Russian national (he lived in China) named Anatoly Legkodymov, who apparently calls himselfā€¦Gandalf

  • It held just $6M in funds at its peak

  • The DOJā€™s indictment alleges the exchange allowed illicit ransomware, drug trafficking, and other cybercriminal folks to launder money

  • $700M in funds flowed into or from the dark web marketplace Hydra

  • Officials arrested Gandalf in Miami Tuesday; he allegedly was aware that unsavory characters were using his exchange for illegal means

  • He faces up to five years in prison

  • Prosecutors also said Bitzlato accepted US users despite claiming it doesnā€™t

And get this: the DOJ misspelled Bitzlato when it initially posted the complaint (ā€œbitzloto.ā€)

Needless to say, the crypto community wasnā€™t super impressed with the DOJā€™s actions on this one.

(Remember when good oleā€™ Gary went after Kim K. and got some welcome media attention?)

What else ya got, Uncle Sam?

ROBINHOOD'S NEW METAMASK COMPETITOR

Robinhood, the nemesis of every YOLOer on /r/wallstreetbets, is launching a Polygon-based software wallet for users to store their NFTs, swap crypto tokens, and connect to DeFi apps.

Itā€™ll be a rival to Ethereum-focused Metamask and Coinbase Wallet (both apps that let users do the same thing.)

And guess what: it wonā€™t have any gas fees. NOICE!

The wallet will slowly roll out to 1M waitlisted Robinhood users in the next few weeks and months.

And like everything in this good world, iPhone users get access to it first.

Youā€™ll have to wait your turn, green bubblers.
